The inaugural Wayne Buckle Memorial Bursary has been awarded to La Ronge Churchill Community High School students Kristjana Bergsveinson and Xyrene Cheng.

The Wayne Buckle Memorial Bursary, which is valued at $7,500, provides funding to support one or two northern students each year from La Ronge as they work towards post-secondary education. The bursary is sponsored by the Campling Family Foundation in recognition of Buckle’s dedication to education, his profession, friendship, family and his love of La Ronge.

“These students were selected as they showed a stellar commitment to their education and to their community, through remarkable grades and great community involvement,” Sam Campling wrote in an email to larongeNOW.

Buckle was a lawyer who worked in many legal settings, including private practice, Legal Aid and the prosecution’s office. He attended the University of Saskatchewan, and he did his law practicum in Prince Albert.

Buckle enjoyed spending time with family and friends in the quietness of the North, especially Wadin Bay, the place he called home. He was a longtime advocate for education.

The next open round for applications to the Wayne Buckle Memorial Bursary will be announced in late spring 2026.
