Ice Wolves finish preseason with two wins

The La Ronge Ice Wolves have finished the 2025-2026 preseason with two wins and five losses.

“We played good at times, but we have to be way more consistent for 60 minutes,” said Head Coach Kevin Kaminski.

“They have to stay structured and play within the system and it all starts from defence first. We really pride on stingy D…making sure pucks are out, we’re protecting home plate, all of that stuff, blocking shots, so that part really has to get better and then the execution…we have opportunities to create two on ones or breakaways and our passing is just off.”

The preseason began Sept. 1 with a game against the new Warman Wolverines, which the Ice Wolves won with a 3-2 score. They then went on to lose four games against the Flin Flon Bombers and the Nipawin Hawks, before gaining a shootout win against the Wolverines on Sept. 12. The Wolverines, however, struck back the following day with a 6-1 win.

Kaminski explained the Ice Wolves need to have a better work ethic and stronger competitive attitude before the regular season begins in Flin Flon on Friday.

“You give everyone a good opportunity to show their stuff and we made about six cuts after the last game here on Saturday and there are still more to be made,” he remarked.

“Now, there is a trickle-down effect. Guys are getting cut from the WHL, BCHL, AJHL, that we’re looking to pick up to upgrade our defence, our offence. I think we need to get bigger up front. It never ends and that’s why, even in practice, you can’t take a day off. There’s someone always out there that can take your job, so you have to prove it day in and day out.”

This week Kaminski noted the Ice Wolves will be working hard at practice on systems, faceoff plays, powerplays, penalty kills, forechecking and defence zone coverage.

“It’s just about preparation,” he added.

“It’s about getting everyone on the same page, having good practices, having good habits and getting focused for the game, and when the puck drops in Flin Flon on Friday night, we know Flin Flon always has a great team and we have to be way better than what we were.”

The Ice Wolves will begin their first regular season at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre on Saturday against the Bombers. Construction has been completed on the dressing rooms, benches, offices and merchandise booth, but a new score clock has yet to be installed.
