Crews continue to work on roadways around Reynolds Central School in Melfort.

Municipal Project Manager Nadine Gouws told northeastNOW that the work includes roadway excavation, rebuilding the base, installing new pavement, and repairing or replacing curbs, gutters, and sidewalks where needed.

“The improvements are designed to extend the life of the infrastructure and improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians,” Gouws said.

Director of Works and Utilities Kalyna Cipywnyk said the project also includes the installation of flashing crosswalk signs and a new section of sidewalk along the north side of Hatton Ave. E. That work is part of Melfort’s Pedestrian Safety Improvement project and is partially funded by the SGI Traffic Safety Fund. The pedestrian safety improvements in the area began in 2023.

The improvements were deemed high priority, according to Gouws, due to their poor condition and high use by school traffic. She said the renewal “aligns with our long-term plan to replace aging infrastructure in phases, while also addressing safety and accessibility improvements around key community facilities such as schools.”

Cipywnyk said the area was also set for renewal after the 2022 watermain relining on McKendry Ave. E.

There are temporary closures in place on McKendry Ave. E. and Alberta St., with no through traffic allowed. Gouws said a detailed traffic management plan was developed with input from the principals at Reynolds School and MUCC, along with the North East School Division (NESD) transportation division to prioritize student safety and minimize disruptions.

The project had a later start than hoped, as Gouws said the appointed contractor experienced worker shortages and weather delays that pushed back the start date to the start of the school year.

“Anticipating the potential overlap, we prepared a strong coordination plan to ensure safety and minimize disruption,” Gouws said.

The project is expected to be completed in about three weeks, weather permitting, and Gouws said the city will keep people up to date on any progress and timelines through their website and direct contact with stakeholders.

Gouws said stakeholder consultation on the project is crucial and added school staff members have commented that the project has been well organized and safety has been prioritized. She thanked the community for their patience and understanding during construction.

When the contractor completes the work around Reynolds School, they will then complete pavement on Osborne St. and Babington Ave. W. Cipywnyk said the work on Osborne St. includes patching the road following last fall’s watermain replacement project, and the project on Babington is for their Local Improvement Project.

The other major capital project in Melfort is the landfill construction project, which is scheduled to be finished by late October.
