The Melfort Multi-K was another smashing success this past weekend.

Over 500 participants showed up for the 1K Kids Fun Run, the 5K, the 10K, or the 21.1K.

Race Director Allison Rogers told northeastNOW the event was everything they hoped it would be.

This year’s event was bittersweet for many, as organizers celebrated the life of Jeff Gendall.

The long-time committee member passed away in March and during the event, organizers said he was a huge supporter and an incredibly enthusiastic presence.

“The day was to focus on celebrating him and what he contributed to the committee, so I think it turned out pretty good,” Rogers said. “He championed what Multi-K was about, which was just getting active no matter your ability, your age.”

Rogers said there were many members of Gendall’s family on-hand at the Multi-K, and she was happy that the event could honour him. The 5K race was dubbed the Jeff Gendall Memorial 5K at this year’s race, and the medals handed out featured a likeness of Gendall leading a group of runners.

This was the 14th annual Melfort Multi-K and its success is impressive for a community the size of Melfort. Rogers said that there were 506 participants in this year’s event, with 570 signing up.

“For a town of 6000, that’s pretty impressive,” Rogers said. “Probably half of our participants are from out of town.”

The number of spectators that came out to cheer on the runners also impressed Rogers, and their presence helped to give the Multi-K a busy, fun atmosphere. She said the committee looks to make the event a fun, family-friendly, community-focused event each year. While some of the runners are racing seriously, Rogers said the Multi-K also is all about smiles and enjoyment.

An event like this could also not be possible without the 100 volunteers, and sponsors, through monetary or in-kind donations. Rogers also thanked the City of Melfort for their efforts in blocking off roads and helping to keep racers safe.

Next year’s race will be a little later – Sept. 19 – due to the Queen City Marathon in Regina being later as well.

“It’s our 15th year next year, so pretty excited to celebrate 15 years, which is crazy,” said Rogers.

Next year’s race will be Rogers’ final one as Race Director, and she said the committee is also looking for more members. Rogers said while the event can be a lot of work, it is very rewarding, and anyone interested in being Race Director or a committee member can reach out to her or existing committee members for more information. You can also contact the Multi-K through their website.
