Spike strips used to help arrest wanted suspects after fleeing from police

Pierceland RCMP have arrested two people after the car they were travelling in failed to stop for police.

It happened on Sunday on Big Island Lake Cree Nation when RCMP were notified of wanted individuals driving past a security checkpoint.

Officers quickly located the vehicle they were travelling in and attempted a traffic stop, however, the vehicle kept driving and eventually sped off heading west on Highway 55 at a high rate of speed.

For public safety, a tire deflation device, or spike strip, was set up and the suspect vehicle ran it over, causing all four tires to pop and forcing the vehicle to a stop. A sawed-off shotgun was seized from the car following a search and two people were arrested.

As a result, 32-year-old Tamarah Dillon from Onion Lake First Nation and a female youth from Big Island Lake Cree Nation have been handed a list of charges, including possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a restricted firearm without a license, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Dillon is also charged with 12 counts of possession of a firearm when prohibited and one count of possession of a prohibited firearm without a license. Those charges stem from an attempted armed robbery on Island Lake First Nation on Sept. 12. She will appear in Pierceland Provincial Court on Oct. 7.

Meanwhile, the female youth was additionally charged with unsafe storage of firearms, unauthorized possession of a firearm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a peace officer, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. She appeared in Pierceland Provincial Court on Sept. 16.

RCMP thanks Cold Lake RCMP in Alberta for their help in the investigation.
