“Humanity is still there”: Thanks to community, SpuDogs trailer found days after being stolen

Saturday, September 13th started off as a great day for SpuDogs, a North Battleford food truck serving the community since 2019. The truck was at the local Fall Festival all day serving happy customers downtown.

Unfortunately, SpuDogs was stolen after a long night of cleaning and preparation for Bruce and Gail Clark, the owners.

“We worked until about one in the morning because we were going to head out to Glaslyn the following morning…we were going to take them food and we woke up Sunday morning ready to go, went outside and the ‘Dogs’ was just gone.”, said Gail Clark.

Clark said that she went outside and spoke to her neighbour, whose truck was also stolen on Saturday night. When they realized the magnitude of the situation, the owners called the police who were there in minutes. From there they posted the incident to Facebook, and the search began.

An outpour of support came from the community, even more than the Clarks could have expected.

“It was overwhelming until even last night. My phone has been blowing up like crazy…I’m starting to feel bad that I can’t keep up to everybody and I don’t want them to feel ignored”, said Clark about the help they have gotten from the community.

It became a focus for farmers around the area as well. Finding the trailer may not have been a priority, but it was in their mind. That paid off because after days of rigorous searching by the owners, they got a call from area farmer Kendall Fransoo, saying that he had found the truck.

By coincidence, the Clarks had just driven by while on their search. Clark said she told Fransoo on the phone; “well jeez Louise, we just passed you!” when he said he was off the garbage dump road near a familiar yellow semi that the Clarks had just passed.

“He could have been rocking out to Morgan Wallen in his combine, even with blinders on because the trailer was actually found in a spot that was already combined. I don’t know why he was looking in that spot or spraying. I guess he was spraying but I mean, it was already done. So, he was alert, he was awake while he was doing his job and paying attention, and he spotted that.”

She also mentioned that her family was out looking for the truck as well so all of them were able to come together and reunite with SpuDogs. When talking about the search, Clark shone a light on the Battlefords and how everyone came together to try and help out.

“I had tears in my eyes most of those three days, I just couldn’t believe it. You see it on TV and hear about it on the internet, and you hear about it with other stories. But you never imagine that it’s going to apply to you one day. It’s just unreal.” she said about the community. “Humanity is still there, it’s all in the Battlefords still”

SpuDogs looks to be active again in the community soon, and more updates will be available on their Facebook page.

Clark said that the neighbour’s truck still has not been recovered. BattlefordsNOW staff have reached out to the RCMP for further information and are awaiting a response.
