Passenger in stolen vehicle handed 7 month jail sentence

A woman who was a passenger in a stolen vehicle where a gun was present, has received a seven month jail sentence.

Acotia Bradfield, 21, of La Ronge appeared by video for her hearing Thursday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

Guilty pleas were entered to a number of charges including being an occupant in a vehicle knowing there is a prohibited firearm present, and failing to comply with a probation order. Last May she received a two-year suspended sentence for a robbery and her conditions included a 24-hour curfew.

RCMP first learned of the stolen vehicle on August 15 around 3 pm, when it was taken from a location on Highway 2. The vehicle was later involved in an armed robbery in Prince Albert.

The next morning around 10:30, Waskesiu/Montreal Lake detachment officers found the stolen vehicle near the Montreal Lake Cree Nation turnoff and attempted to pull the driver over.

The driver did not comply and sped off south on Highway 2 at speeds up to 180km/hr. A spike belt was deployed near the Christopher Lake turning off and after turning onto Forest Gate road, the vehicle came to a stop in a nearby forested area.

Bradfield was arrested at the scene and told police there was a sawed-off shotgun in the vehicle.

She also explained she had been picked up by a “friend of a friend” and was on her way to Prince Albert. She claimed to have no knowledge of the robbery or the fact the vehicle was stolen.

The driver fled the scene on foot but was arrested later. Edward Henderson’s next court date is on Sept. 22.

“Every time a firearm is involved, it’s always serious,” Judge McAuley said, agreeing that the proposed jail sentence by lawyers was appropriate in this case.

Bradfield was granted remand credit of 51 days and upon release she’ll be prohibited for life from owning or possessing any firearms or explosives.
