Sask. govt and Roughriders consider future tailgating opportunities

The green and white party at Mosaic Stadium could get a lot bigger if a new plan comes to fruition.

In an email to season ticket holders, Saskatchewan Roughrider President and CEO Craig Reynolds confirms legal tailgating may be available as early as next season.

“In addition to those many season ticket member benefits, we have been working with the Government of Saskatchewan on potential ways to further elevate our game day experience. Next season, we hope to bring you legal tailgating at the Mosaic Stadium footprint for Rider home games. Season ticket members would have first access to tailgate spaces if and when we are able to confirm this proposal is going ahead in the coming months.”

There would be legal and public safety aspects to consider at both the provincial and city level before such plans could move forward.

In an emailed statement, the government confirmed those discussions are underway.

“We are actively exploring the Roughriders’ request to develop a regulated framework for tailgating at Mosaic Stadium for Saskatchewan Roughriders games. This involves a number of considerations including ensuring public safety, which is a top priority. Any potential framework would require support from and close collaboration with the City of Regina for these events.”

When asked after Wednesday’s council meeting to comment, Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski said he would be open to collaborating to move this forward.

“As long as we are moving through collaboratively to make sure we address any type of safety concerns or legalities, that would be my biggest concern. Obviously, as the city gets more information, we would work together to understand exactly what they are looking to put, but we would get more information to understand holistically what they are looking for,” Bachynski said.

Mosaic Stadium sits within the Regina Exhibition Association Ltd., which is the property of the city. There may be bylaws that would require a change and approval of council for legalised tailgating to go ahead.

In 2019, CJME reported Saskatchewan had considered following Ontario’s suit to legalize tailgating.

The then minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority Gene Makowsky said there weren’t any imminent changes expected to the liquor laws to allow tailgating.

At that time, Makowsky explained laws would have to change to allow U.S.-style tailgating, where fans bring and consume their own alcoholic beverages.

While there weren’t any plans currently in the works to allow tailgating in Saskatchewan, Makowsky said if there was a demand, he was open to exploring the option.

He also said the province would likely want to consult with the public, the city, the police and the Roughriders before making any decision.
