The Prince Albert Raiders opened the weekend with a 4-2 win at home against the Saskatoon Blades, and followed it up Saturday to finish the home and home series. Both teams got oddly similar scoring performances from 20-year-old veterans to send it to overtime before Saskatoon ended it 3-2.

Just 30 seconds into the game, Rowan Calvert opened the scoring when he won a puck battle behind the net, and as he came out the other side of the net he threw the puck in front where it banked off Dimitri Fortin and into the back of the net.

The Raiders and Blades then traded chances back and forth with the Raiders getting one powerplay in the period. They got their chances, but Ethan McCallum kept the puck out of the net.

With their first powerplay of the game, the Blades Cooper Williams worked the puck into the slot where Dominik Petr got a whack at it, but the puck came to Calvert in the middle of the slot who fired home his second of the game at 3:12.

Under halfway through the period, a scrum after a Linden Burrett tripping penalty lead to a heavyweight fight to start the season between Oli Chenier and Triston Mitchell-McElhone. The two traded shots back and forth with Chenier landing an uppercut near the end, but both men tired out and gave a show of respect at the end.

The Blades failed to score on their powerplay to, but the Raiders wouldn’t fair any better after a Ben Bowtell hooking call.

After 2: Raiders 0 – 2 Blades, shots 9-8 Raiders, 16-14 Raiders overall

In the third period, Brayden Dube recreated what Rowan Calvert did for the Blades in the first two periods. First at 7:21, Burrett and Aiden Oiring worked to get the puck to Dube skating down the right wall. He used his speed to get just enough room from the defender to get a shot away, then surprised McCallum with a quick wrist shot for his first of the year.

Dube’s game of copycat continued when he scored a powerplay goal of his own at 13:39. Riley Boychuk worked the puck from the middle of the umbrella on the blueline, and he sent it over to Aiden Oiring on the right wall, and he sent the puck through the slot on a tee for Dube, who blasted the onetimer into the net to tie the game.

The Raiders killed one more penalty on the night on a delay of game call, which means the Raiders finished the weekend 8/10 on the penalty kill, and 2/5 on the powerplay.

After 3: Raiders 2 – 2 Blades, shots 9-5 Raiders, 25-19 Raiders overall

In overtime, the Raiders won the initial faceoff and held on to possession for a full minute of play, even getting a line change after having cycled the puck towards the offensive zone, but they only generated a single shot.

Then at 1:25 into the extra period, a Raiders defender fell as he tried to pick up the puck along the wall, sending Saskatoon on the rush instead. Brayden Klimpke set up a onetimer for Hayden Harsanyi coming in, but the rebound came back to Klimpke and he managed to put it in.

FINAL: Raiders 2 – 3 Blades, shots 3-1 Blades, 26-22 Raiders overall

The Blades finish the weekend with three out of four possible points on the opening series with the Blades.

In goal, Dimitri Fortin and Michal Orsulak both had goal get by them that they would want back, but both played exceptionally well with key saves and gave their team a great chance to win on either night. Fortin finished with a 0.863 save percentage with 19 saves on 22 shots, and Orsulak finished with 0.935 with 29 saves on 31 shots.

Brayden Dube and Aiden Oirng each set each other up for a onetimer on the weekend, Dube earning 2G-1A and Oiring adding 1G-2A. Owen Corkish was credited for an assist in the opening night that will be corrected to Tyone Sobry, but has looked great in two games on the line with Oiring and Dube.

Justice Christensen could get invited to play in a preseason game for the Detroit Red Wings with games on the schedule for Tuesday and Thursday, and still join the Raiders for the road swing in Regina and Brandon that starts on Friday.

The San Jose Sharks play their first preseason game on Sunday, September 21st. It’s possible Max Heise could get invited at the time of this writing, but if the Sharks don’t use him Monday and still want to see him in game action, Raiders fans may be waiting until Saturday or further to see his debut.

The Raiders will head on the road for their first back to back game nights on the road, first on Friday, September 26, and then follow it up against the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday, September 27.
