Wolverines drop tight contest in Humboldt

The Warman Wolverines recorded some milestone firsts in their second game of the season but their first win will have to wait for another day following a 3-1 loss to the Humboldt Broncos on Saturday at Elgar Petersen Arena in Humboldt.

Owen Parks etched his name in Wolverines lore by scoring the first regular season goal in team history, giving the club its first ever regular season lead in the process, but that was the only offence Warman could muster as the Broncos roared back to complete a sweep of the home and home series.

For the second straight night the two Nutrien Division rivals locked horns in a low-scoring affair as Wolverines goaltender Griffin Wright and Broncos netminder Charlie Tritt were once again two of the best players on the ice. Wright made 31 saves in the loss while Tritt stopped 33 shots to earn his second victory in as many nights following a shutout performance in Friday’s 3-0 win.

But it was Tritt who gave up the game’s first goal as Parks broke through for his historic marker at 5:26 of the opening period. After a faceoff win in the Broncos zone, Lucas Frame fired a shot off the ankle of Humboldt’s Ryder Knutson, hobbling the Broncos captain and before he could recover, Parks found himself alone in the slot and ripped a wrister past Tritt to stake the Wolverines to the early lead.

The advantage didn’t last long. Just over three minutes later, Tyce Penrod sped down the ice and fed Saskatoon native Rylan Hue as he slipped behind the defence and made a move on Wright before depositing the puck into the open side of the net.

The Broncos then went in front right at the midway mark of the frame as Avery Lowe threw the puck towards the crease from the right wing corner and it snuck through Wright’s legs and into the net.

Three goals in the first ten minutes of play seemed to forecast a high-scoring affair, but things tightened up from there, with the game’s only other goal coming off the stick of Broncos winger Logan Flint with just 3.2 seconds left and the Wolverines net empty as they pushed for a late equalizer.

As in Friday’s season opener, neither team was able to generate much on the man advantage, going a combined 0-for-9 on the night. The Wolverines’ best chances came on a 93-second five-on-three in the middle frame but they could not solve Tritt.

Warman’s next opportunity to record their first regular season win comes on Sept. 23 when they visit the Battlefords North Stars. The game can be heard live on SaskNow.com.
