$1.3M highway upgrades to improve safety with new turning lanes in Battleford

Highway construction work is set to begin this week on turning lanes along Highway 4 in the Town of Battleford, according to local MLA Jeremy Cockrill.

Cockrill said the project will add new right-hand turning lanes at both 22nd Street and 29th Street.

“If the weather permits this fall, work will also start on a new left-turning lane off of Highway 16 onto Hereford Street into the area that houses Cargill, Discovery Co-op Farm Supply, Pattison Ag and many other local businesses,” Cockrill said in a social media post.

He noted many residents will remember a fatal crash at the intersection last September.

“We lost an individual who served many in our community. Thank you to the many individuals and businesses who have helped advocate for this intersection improvement,” he noted.

The Saskatchewan government is investing an estimated $1.3 million into the upgrades, which Cockrill said will improve safety for both passenger and commercial traffic.

Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie welcomed the investment, saying town council had long pushed for the changes.

“Council advocated for these turning lanes and our Saskatchewan Party listened. Very much appreciated,” Leslie said in a social media post.

“I was at the elevator the day of the fatal collision and remember the impact it had on our staff, customers and community. So, the addition of this turning lane at Hereford Street will be a significant investment to keep many safe for years to come.”

The work will be carried out by local contractor G&C Asphalt. Cockrill urged drivers to slow down in construction zones and be patient while the projects are underway.
