City looks again to take expressions of interest for Steuart Arena

User groups and organizations in Prince Albert will once again have the chance to present their ideas to the city on what the Dave G. Steuart arena should be used for.

On Monday, council voted in favour of moving forward with the staff recommendation to take new expressions of interest for use of the old arena.

There appears to be some interest as groups have already approached staff with ideas.

“Members of council and the City’s management team have received informal verbal communication from various local organizations expressing their interest in the future of the facility. The Parks, Recreation & Culture Department is of the opinion that the best way to proceed is through an Expression of Interest process,” read council’s agenda for Monday’s executive committee meeting.

Recommendations passed at Executive Committee must still pass again during a regular council meeting, but generally do as longer discussions happen during the Executive meeting.

While the period for expressions to come in runs, administration said they will be watching how this year’s winter ice season runs. With the opening of the twin pad ice surfaces at the new Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre, the city technically has one more surface than it did before.

However, groups such as Prince Albert Minor Hockey have said that they would still use the Steuart as some of their players hold their practices on out-of-town rinks because they can’t get time in the city.

In January, Trevor Redden, who was serving as the general manager for PA Minor Hockey at the time, told paNOW they would use the arena, even with the additional ice surfaces.

“The Steuart arena is hugely important to us,” he said. “If you look at our scenario this year, a lot of families who have signed up for hockey in Prince Albert have had to have a lot of games and practices out of town.”

One of the issues with the arena is that it needs repairs on its roof – a number that came back at $600,000 originally.

At least one councillor disputed that number.

Dan Brown said in February that his own rough calculations put the roof at 30,000 square feet and would take $117,000 in plywood plus about $42,000 in shingles.

With the exception of Brown, who voted in opposition at Monday’s meeting, council was in favour of moving forward with the expression of interest proposal and the vote passed 8-1
