Kingsmen win Saskatoon Cricket League ODP Div 1 championship

Prince Albert is continuing to make waves and leave their mark in the sport of cricket in the province.

Last weekend, on Sept. 13, one of the city’s longest-standing clubs, The Kingsmen, added another piece of hardware to their trophy case after winning the Saskatoon Cricket League ODP Div 1.

The Kingsmen, also known as the Emperors, managed to take down a fellow Prince Albert team in the Phantoms, winning by seven wickets.

Kingsmen captain Gaurav Kumar said the win was “a great achievement.”

“Last year, we won the T20 final and this year, we made it again and unfortunately did not win. But in ODP, we reached the final and we won the title this year. This year was a little bit different – this is the first time we won the ODP and I’m very thankful [to] the team.”

He added it was the first time a team from P.A. has won a title playing in ODP.

Although the sport is still cricket, T20 and ODP are two different styles of play.

T20, known as Twenty20, is a shortened format of cricket where each team plays a single innings with a maximum of 20 overs, taking around three hours to complete. Meanwhile, ODP, or one-day games, consist of 40 overs and take up to eight hours to play from start to finish.

Needing a lot of endurance and strength to pull out the win, Kumar said it was a full team effort.

“Everybody pitched in and everybody focused on what they could control and [the] end result was we were the champions.”

Additionally, Kumar said that it was funny that the only two teams from Prince Albert playing in the Saskatoon Cricket League ODP Div 1 would eventually meet in the finals.

“We were thinking when the season started, ‘Hey, let’s see if we both can be made in the final,’ and with God’s grace, it actually happened. It was a very nice, friendly competition. As soon as we knew it was the final, we were happy that the trophy was going to come to Prince Albert, it was just a matter of time for who was going to get it.”

The Man of the Match in the finals for The Kingsmen was Grove Venter, who drove in 63 runs alone on 74 balls.
