Late newcomers add increased excitement for Timberjaks ahead of third season

A couple of late additions to the roster for the Prince Albert Timberjaks has the team in a better spot than they were expecting.

That’s according to the club’s head coach and general manager Stef Corfmat, who said on top of some returnees from last year, the team also got a big boost between the pipes.

The Jaks were hit with a stroke of luck when they got word that netminder Josh Henry was returning from Junior A, alongside forward Brody Anderson, who’s the reigning Prairie Junior Hockey League’s (PJHL) Rookie of the Year. P.A. also picked up defenceman Marc Bourdon from the Battlefords AAA Stars.

“We’re looking better than we thought we would have been,” said Corfmat. “[Henry] kind of solidifies the goalie position, our D is going to be a lot better.”

The news comes after the team lost Keethan Isbister, who was P.A.’s leading scorer last season as well as the PJHL’s Most Valuable Player. He signed in B.C. for the season with the Creston Valley Thunder Cats in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL).

Prior to opening night on Friday, the team had a chance to play together earlier in the month for three preseason games, where they fell in two of the contests against the Saskatoon Quakers and one against the Carrot River Outback Thunder.

Corfmat added that despite the preseason result, he and the other coaches are happy with the final product they’re putting out on opening night.

“If any indication from preseason, it seems like the guys are going to stick up for each other a lot more this year, and I think it’s a little bit more of a tougher team. We’re happy with the young guys we have and with our returning guys, there’s always hope that other guys come back, but at the end of the day, you got to move on and go with what you have.”

The Jaks open the season at home Friday when they welcome the Quakers to the Northern Regional Rec Centre (NRRC, formerly Buckland Arena) for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
