A Lloydminster woman has been honoured with an award after helping to save several lives during an emergency that took place near Tisdale.

Bailey Steier, who works as a paramedic at Melfort Ambulance Care, received the Star of Life Team Medal at the Paramedic Services Chiefs of Saskatchewan Emergency Medical Services Provincial Awards, which were held at Government House in Regina. The medal was presented to her by Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan Bernadette McIntyre.

Steier was excited to receive the medal, but was not expecting an award for her work.

“I’m so honoured and humbled by it. It was really a surprise. We had no idea we were even being considered for it, but it felt really nice to be recognized for sure,” she said.

The award is given to teams of EMS individuals for acts of bravery, heroism and going above and beyond the call of duty. Steier and other responders did so while attending the scene of a bus crash 22 kilometres south of Tisdale.

Last October, the Kinistin High School bus, which transports students from Kinistin Saulteaux Nation to school in Tisdale, was in an accident that resulted in 28 passengers, including 27 high school students, needing to be rescued. The driver of the bus and six students were seriously injured.

Steier said that her and the rest of the emergency response team would not have been recognized if it were not for their teamwork.

“I definitely credit all my co-workers and all of the other ambulance services that responded that day as well. I really couldn’t be where I am without them and it takes a real group effort to be able to accomplish things in this career. And the community, like it’s an honour to serve the community and know that I’m able to make a difference.

“I work with an amazing group of people and it’s an amazing field where everyone is really ready to step up with kindness and competence whenever they’re ready, like in a moment’s notice. Everyone is extremely educated and professional. I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to work with in this situation for sure.”

Along with Steier and the medical staff at Melfort Ambulance Care, the emergency response team also consisted of members from Medavie Health Services West – Shamrock/Rose Valley, Naicam and District Ambulance, Tisdale Ambulance Care and MCCN.
