Making History

Local ballplayer has month to remember

A female baseball player from Humboldt had one of, if not the busiest, months of her young career recently.

Camden Suchan was a part of the 16U Girls’ Canada Summer Games roster, the 19U Women’s Team Sask roster, and the Senior Women’s Team Sask roster, participating in three major events across the country.

“It was awesome, such a great experience for all three of them. I wasn’t home for about three weeks, but I did get some time to just relax and enjoy my experiences and tour around some very cool parts of our country,” she told northeastNOW.

“I was just on such a high and having so much fun that I actually didn’t get tired until I got home. Whenever we had a game the next day, I was just ready and excited to go out and play… the experiences were everything I hoped for and more. It was just awesome to do what I loved; there’s probably not going to be a summer that comes close to this one.”

Suchan first travelled to Calgary, Alta., for the 2025 19U Women’s Baseball National Championship, which ran for four days.

Her next visit took her to Quebec City for the 2025 Senior Women’s Baseball National Championship (which featured 21 and 22-year-olds) four days later, also taking place over a four-day stretch.

Finally, Suchan arrived in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, for the 2025 Canada Summer Games, which began on the second day of the Senior Women’s National Championship, and ran for an additional 17 days.

“It’s felt weird coming back home and getting into the routine of school and high school sports like volleyball, which I’m doing right now. Definitely a change of pace and not the same type of lifestyle as I had during the summer. I do miss playing ball because it’s just what I like to do,” she added.

“Hopefully, I can make these teams next summer and travel to some fun places. I know Saskatoon is looking to host either senior or 19U, so obviously, it’d be really cool to play in front of family and friends in that. The next big thing I’ll be looking forward to is next summer.”

In the 19U National Championship in Calgary, Suchan and Team Sask won bronze over Team B.C. In the bronze medal game, Saskatchewan was down 11-4 at one point before a 12-run inning late propelled them to a comeback victory.

Suchan pitched a little bit in the tournament, but was mainly the team’s third baseman.

“There were lots of girls there that were my age (16), so I got lots of playing time, and it was definitely a step up. Last year, it was 21U, which I played in, but they bumped it down to 19U this year, so it was just great playing with them, and a little more intense, which was good.”

Meanwhile, for the Senior National Championship in Quebec, Suchan and Team Saskatchewan were in another bronze medal match, but unfortunately, they lost to Team Ontario.

Suchan, just 16 years old, was one of the youngest players on her team, and although she didn’t play a lot, she learned a lot.

“Two other girls and I were the youngest on the team, and I didn’t play a whole lot, but I was ready if they needed me. I did end up getting in a few times, and it was just an awesome experience playing against older girls, some of whom are on Team Canada,” she continued.

“Watching those older players, you realize they make mistakes sometimes, too, but they always just keep playing with their heads high and always try to do their best. That Team Canada label doesn’t affect them, even when they might be playing against their teammates from other provinces.”

And finally, Suchan ended in St. John’s for the Canada Summer Games, as she and Team Sask finished fifth in the very first female baseball event in the tournament’s history.

“It was an awesome experience. Baseball was held in the second week of the tournament, so we got to be a part of the closing ceremonies. For the first game, too, every team went on the field ahead of it, so that was cool as well,” she concluded.

“It’s awesome that girls’ baseball has become such a big thing. Also being one of the oldest on the team, I felt like more of a leader and played a lot. We all got along so well, and it was amazing to know that so many girls back home were watching us and looking up to us. It’s crazy to think that our team was making history, and I was one of the leaders to be able to help do that.”
