Myra Malboeuf is the new mayor of Île-à-la-Crosse.

She won the by-election held Sept. 24 with 329 votes against 155 votes for Lloyd Yew and 16 for Mervin Bouvier. Malboeuf replaced Buckley Belanger, who is now the MP for Desnethé -Missinippi-Churchill River.

“I was on council for four terms prior to this. I had ran for the mayorship in November, but was unsuccessful,” Malboeuf remarked.

“It became vacant again … and I got the push and support to put my name back in again, so that’s what I did and this time I was successful in getting the mayorship.”

Malboeuf brings with her 14 years of experience in governance and she has been employed by the Île-à-la-Crosse Friendship Centre for 25 years.

In the next year or two, she’d liked to work on improving mental health and addictions, as well as support for the aging population and young people.

“Like every other community, we have the same issues that we need to sit together as a community and as a region and as a province and as a country and combat those issues and put the right people at the table to work on the issues and involve more people to get a better perspective,” Malboeuf said.

“I kind of hold that to my heart where everyone has something to offer and that’s the model I am going to use.”
