Boreal Cornhole League lands in Prince Albert

Sep 26, 2025 | 5:00 PM

Cornhole is a game that’s been growing in popularity across Canada and now Prince Albert has a league to call its own.

The opening night for the Boreal Cornhole League was held Thursday night at the legion and attracted over 20 people. President Joe Bexson noted there has been a number of interested players travelling to Saskatoon and Regina..

“We loved what was going on with their organizations, and we wanted to bring here to Prince Albert,” he explained.
”And we knew that there were a bunch of players playing during the summer at the lakes and we’re the gateway to the lakeland, so it was a no brainer.”

The addictive game that has also become popular at weddings and company socials, involves single players or teams exchanging throws with a beanbag at an inclined board that has a hole in its far end. Points are scored by either landing a bag on the board (one point) or putting a bag through the hole (three points).

While humble about his own ability and skill, Bexson noted he has both a son and a granddaughter who play very well.

The Boreal Cornhole League in Prince Albert will run every Thursday night at the legion and Bexson said it’s open to all ages. There is a small entry fee and an app where people can sign up.

“We have an app that works across Canada for anyone who’s playing cornhole and you can register on that app and it’s lickety split and it’s a great tool to help you find tournaments if you’re traveling anywhere in Canada,” Bexson said.

Saskatchewan Cornhole Association President Kevin Bittman drove from Regina to attend the Prince Albert league’s opening night and he was very impressed with the turnout.

“You know when we had our kickoff meeting, we asked how many people do you think you could get there and they said well we’ll get over 20 for sure and I’m like, okay, that’s what everybody says but they delivered.”

In addition to Prince Albert, there’s also leagues in Regina, Weyburn, Moose Jaw, and Saskatoon. Acknowledging the one woman and one teenage girl in attendance on Thursday amongst the plethora of male players, Bittman was confident as word spread about the league, more women would come out to play.

“One of our missions as the Saskatchewan Cornhole Association is to try and get the women out more, because it’s no secret that if the women come, the men will too. But for the most part, we have some of the best women throwers in Canada here in Saskatchewan.”

Ian Litzenberger was among the keen players who came out and told paNOW with summer winding down, and winter around the corner, cornhole represents a fun activity to do with your friends.

“I think it’s a great fit [for Prince Albert]. I think any time we can be in a group setting and have some activity and something different for the community it is always a win.”
