Divisional Rematch

Mustangs welcome Ice Wolves for second straight meeting

Sep 26, 2025 | 4:29 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will face off against the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Friday night, marking the second consecutive meeting between the two division rivals.

Melfort went into La Ronge on Tuesday and picked up their first win of the season by a score of 3-1.

Now, they’ll host the Ice Wolves and look for their first win at home on the year, after falling to the Nipawin Hawks last Friday at the Palace.

“We want to start on time tonight. We didn’t play well in the first period on Tuesday, but we looked good in the second and third, so just focusing on bringing a full sixty [minutes]. Most of the guys on our team are used to being above .500, so we’re trying to get back to that standard tonight with a win,” said Mustangs’ forward Kaleb Binner.

“Everybody’s going to play us tough, and we knew that coming into the year. It’s great to have a couple of division rivals right off the bat; it’s good hockey, and it’s always a battle. They’re fun, they bring the intensity, and they’re always exciting.”

A big difference in the two matches for the Stangs was special teams play.

The Blue and Green had a much-improved penalty kill and added a pair more power-play goals, as they seek consistency on that front, in hopes of redemption in front of their fans.

“We want to show our fans that we’re capable of winning again this year; the goal on our team and the mentality inside the locker room is to win. We never lose two in a row, and especially getting beat at home, we’re gonna come out flying, work hard, and be ready to go,” Binner added.

“Special teams are huge keys to success. We want our power play to get going even more, and we’ve always had a good penalty kill in the last couple of years. It’s the style that we like to play, and I think they’ll both be ready to go on Friday.”

Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
