North West College and Discovery Co-op have decided to commemorate National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by wearing orange shirts specially designed for the Battlefords region.

The shirt features a design developed by Decolonial Clothing Co., which is a Kelowna-based Indigenous-owned graphic design studio. The shirt will be distributed to North West College staff and students as well as Discovery Co-op employees in the Battlefords.

Both organizations said the initiative reflects their shared commitments to recognizing the residential school history of both Canada and the Battlefords specifically as well as advancing reconciliation within the community.

North West College Vice President of Marketing & Student Experience Dr. Priscilla Lothian emphasized the importance of Orange Shirt Day in post-secondary education.

“Orange Shirt Day is not just a day of remembrance; it is a call to action to ensure education serves as a pathway to truth, understanding, and reconciliation. At North West College, we recognize the profound impact residential schools had in this region, and we are committed to creating spaces where learning includes reflection, empathy, and acknowledgment of our shared history.”

Vice President of Marketing of Discovery Co-op Elnette Cilliers added that acknowledging the past is the only way to improve the future.

“For Discovery Co-op, supporting Orange Shirt Day means recognizing the painful truths of the past while committing to building a stronger, more inclusive future. We are proud to stand alongside North West College in ensuring these conversations and reflections continue in our community.”

North West College and Discovery Co-op hope that by wearing the custom shirts, they will amplify the message that “Every Child Matters” and bring awareness and action toward reconciliation.
