Athletes and teams from across the province have descended on Prince Albert this weekend as Saskatchewan Field Lacrosse Provincials get underway this weekend.

Action gets underway on Friday afternoon at Prime Ministers Park, where Prince Albert Lacrosse President Javan Bexson said it’s nice to have teams back in the city for the event.

“It seems like we’ve been hosting field lacrosse provincials a lot because we have such great facilities here in Prince Albert to do so. We’ve been building up, planning for it for the last year and we’re excited for it to finally be here back in Prince Albert once again.”

He added that they’re hosting more age groups than they typically do, including U11, U13, and U15, along with a couple of U9 and U17 showcase games. The competition is the same across all levels, meaning there are no tiers.

In total, 16 teams from around the province will participate, including seven in U11, five in U13, and four in U15, hailing from P.A., Regina, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Weyburn, and Churchbridge. In the U9 and U17 showcase games, teams across Saskatchewan are combining their athletes to compete in a North vs South series.

Bexson said he expects it to be a very competitive weekend.

“Regina seems to always be the field lacrosse powerhouse and lacrosse powerhouse in general, but Prince Albert manages to keep up just fine. It’s going to be good lacrosse, lots of battling on the field and lots of fun and camaraderie as well.”

Games will be played across Prime Ministers Park, including on the turf and under the lights at Max Clunie Field. Select games will also be played at John Diefenbaker School.

The first game of the Saskatchewan Field Lacrosse Provincials is on Friday at 5 p.m. at Prime Ministers Park East when the U11 Prince Albert Attack Navy squares off with Saskatoon.
