St. Mary blanks Lloydminster for second win of season

The St. Mary Marauders were dominant on both sides of the ball on Friday night, shutting out the Lloydminster Barons 27-0 at Max Clunie Field.

The Marauders led 14-0 after the first quarter but could not find the endzone again until the fourth when touchdowns on back-to-back plays, highlighted by a 97-yard rushing TD from Caleb Eckert, sealed St. Mary’s second win of the season.

“I thought today we did a good job just being consistent,” said St. Mary Head Coach Curt Hundeby following the win. “I thought defensively, we’re doing a decent job out front with our D-line, our linebackers are getting better, and DBs are we’re improving, the whole group is improving. Offensively, [we] got to be a bit more consistent than we were today. We had some big stuff, but just wasn’t quite as consistent as I would have liked, but I think that’s stuff we got to work on over the week.”

The win is also St. Mary’s second in a row after downing North Battleford on the road last week, 31-14. For Lloydminster, it’s their second straight loss to start the season following a 31-6 loss to Martensville.

With the Marauders now 2-1 on the year, their focus has already shift to next week as they get set to face Carlton in the 13th annual Car Guys Classic. Hundeby said they’re going to need to sharp this next week if they want to take down the defending provincial champs.

“They have a very good offence, some amazing weapons. They’ve got a very tough defence that loves to fly around, they don’t miss many tackles. They got a very good coaching staff, there special teams are good – there’s no aspect to their game that’s not sharp. And so we need to have the best week of practice we’ve had all year if we want to match that.”

“That’ll be a challenge to our guys is that we we’ve got to match the intensity in the focus that Carlton had last year, so that we can we can play with them this year.”

The Crusaders were also in action on Friday in Martensville, where they downed the Royals 21-13 to improve to 2-0 on the season, standing alone as the only team still able to go undefeated in the NSFL this season.

As mentioned, the 13th annual Car Guys Classic between Carlton and St. Mary is set for Friday, Oct. 3 at Max Clunie Field. Kick off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
