Wolverines fall short in rematch with Klippers
The Warman Wolverines scored on home ice for the first time in franchise history but it was not enough as they fell 3-1 to the Kindersley Klippers on Saturday, settling for a split of their home-and-home series.
Néka Jean’s game-tying power-play goal early in the third period ended a season-opening scoreless drought of 102:13 for the Wolverines in their home rink. But it turned to be the only one they would get past Klippers goaltender Mattias Radke, who made 44 saves in an impressive SJHL debut.
Radke’s performance allowed the Klippers to ride some timely scoring to victory. Despite being outshot 16-3 in the third period, Kindersley found the net twice, with Van Eger firing a wrister over the shoulder of Wolverines netminder Taye Timmerman for the go-ahead goal at 8:24, and Avery Johnson adding an insurance marker on a mini-breakaway at the 13:08 mark. Timmerman stopped 20 shots in the loss.
After combining for 11 goals on Friday in Kindersley, neither team found the scoreboard in the rematch until the dying moments of the second period when Braydon Vandenbilche converted after a flurry of chances to put the Klippers in front with five seconds left.
