As the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season gets going, the voice of the Battlefords North Stars, Ryan Lambert, will be featuring player profiles so fans can learn more about their hometown team and the players they cheer for. The first profile is on team captain Anthony Campbell.

Anthony Campbell is donning the ‘C’ in his second year with the Battlefords North Stars. Being from Quebec, French is his first language. He said he’s ‘not really a speech guy’ but tries to lead by example both on and off the ice.

“I’ll fire the boys up, like on the ice, I try to do the best I can. You’ll never see me (give half effort). I’m always trying to work the hardest I can, try to be the guy that works the hardest,” said Campbell.

An avid golfer with a 10-handicap, Campbell said he spends a lot of time at the course when he’s not on the ice. His dad actually owns a golf course back home in Quebec, so he spends most of his summer working there. He’s also enjoying Saskatchewan golf courses, having recently played at Jackfish Lodge.

Like many 20-year-olds, Campbell also likes to spend his free time out with his friends, playing video games when he can; his favorites are Fortnite and the NHL and PGA series.

Since being here, he said he has grown accustomed to life in Saskatchewan and it’s people, describing them as calmer than his home province of Quebec. In terms of hockey, he said there are also a lot more opportunities in Saskatchewan than Quebec.

“Here it’s like, ok you didn’t make the WHL, so there’s Junior A, then you can play Junior B too. In Quebec, it’s just midget (age group), AAA, (QMJHL),” said Campbell, noting more chances to play between the ‘AAA” and CHL level here.

The North Stars captain wants the team’s supporters to know how much they mean to him as a player.

“I enjoy the fans here, like the kids and the fans that come up to us. If you see us in the grocery store or (wherever), don’t be afraid to come up to us and say hi…we love to chat with you guys and see who’s coming to our games and who’s supporting us. Every time I see the kids, I try to interact with them and make their day, so I’d say don’t be afraid to say hi to us. We’ll be more than happy to talk to you guys.”

Early in the season, Campbell has five points in three games, which is good for second on the team. He’s looking forward to leading the North Stars to what could be their fifth SJHL championship and second in four years.

The Battlefords North Stars next game is this Friday at 7:30 p.m. against the Melfort Mustangs.
