North Battleford mayor to join Sask. delegation in Ottawa to push for renewed infrastructure funding

North Battleford Mayor Kelli Hawtin will be among a group of Saskatchewan leaders travelling to Ottawa Oct. 1 and 2 to press the federal government for renewed cost-shared infrastructure funding.

“It is important we communicate the need for a flexible, renewed multi-level government infrastructure funding program, with equal financial contributions from the federal and provincial governments to match the investments of municipalities,” Hawtin said in a statement issued Sept. 29.

The delegation, which will meet federal officials Oct. 1 and 2, will be led by Government Relations Minister Eric Schmalz and Advanced Education Minister Ken Cheveldayoff. Leaders of the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association(SUMA), the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities(SARM) and mayors from Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Swift Current and Yorkton will also take part.

“We are making the case that Ottawa return to the successful cost-share models that support the stability and economic growth of our municipalities,” Schmalz said in a separate statement issued Sept. 29.

“The bottom line is that investments into community-building projects are investments in a strong and stable nation.”

Under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, signed in 2019, more than 460 projects worth over $2 billion were approved in the province. But the program is fully subscribed, and Ottawa has not committed to a new round of funding.

With a regional arena and events centre proposed for the Battlefords, Hawtin said she will be among the attendees strongly supporting investment in recreational facilities.

“I am pleased to work with the Saskatchewan and Canadian governments to strengthen investment in our community,” she noted.

“I look forward to sharing the results of our advocacy with council and the public during an upcoming Council Meeting.”
