Warmest September on record for La Ronge

Oct 1, 2025 | 3:53 PM

La Ronge experienced its warmest September out of 62 years of record keeping.

That’s according to data from Environment and Climate Change Canada, which shows the monthly mean temperature for La Ronge being 14.5 C. That represents a 4.3 C departure from normal.

“For the majority of the month, we were under the influence of an upper-level ridge, so what that basically means is at the surface and for temperatures, we were getting a lot of warm Pacific air through the Prairies, including La Ronge. That contributed greatly to the anomalous warmer September that we saw,” said Meteorologist Danielle Desjardins.

“It was all across the board for the stations we keep recordings at in Saskatchewan. It was anywhere from 2.5 to 4.3 C above normal for the month.”

August and May were also relatively warm in La Ronge with August being the sixth warmest on record and May being the second.

As for precipitation, it was a rather dry September with 23.8 millimeters of rain out of a normal 57.3 mm. That follows a trend established earlier this year with April, May and June, collectively, having 58.4 mm of precipitation compared to an average of 144.2 mm. There was 49.2 mm of rain in June, 2.6 mm of rain in May and 6.6 mm of rain in April.

August was an outlier with La Ronge receiving 94.2 mm of rain out of a normal 65.3 mm.

“That pattern was also apparent over much of the province with many regions experiencing less than 50 per cent of their monthly precipitation,” Desjardins noted.

“The only exception to that is there was one night where there were thunderstorms in southeastern Saskatchewan which contributed to over 150 per cent of their monthly precipitation in one shot. That dry trend was apparent over the majority of the province other than that southeast corner.”

The warm temperatures recently will be coming to an end in the coming days. For La Ronge at the moment, the normal daytime high is 11 C with a low of 1 C.

“We are looking at a pattern shift from this above normal temperature pattern we have been seeing, so we are getting into more seasonal and even slightly below seasonal temperatures coming for the start of next week,” Desjardins remarked.

“We are going to be a little bit cooler on Sunday with only a high of 6 C and we are going to see those overnight lows dip below 0 C Sunday onwards. There is a high probably there is going to be some frost next week.”
