Battlefords North Stars sign former Prince Albert Raiders goaltender Steele Bass

The Battlefords North Stars have added a new goalie to their roster, bringing in 17-year-old Steele Bass between the pipes. Bass was drafted with the 49th overall pick by the Raiders in the 2023 WHL draft.

He got into a game with the Raiders this season stopping 18 of 26 shots in a win against the Regina Pats. Last season, he only got one period of action with Prince Albert, turning away 12 of 13 facing the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Before his time with the Raiders last season, Bass appeared in 24 games with the Okotoks Oilers U18 AAA team where he had a 15-7-1 record with a .923 save percentage and 3.03 goals against average (GAA). His 15 wins were tied for the league lead.

North Stars head coach Connor Logan referred to Bass as a ‘great kid that wants to develop’ when talking about adding the former Raider to the lineup.

“Lot of good tools. He’s big, he’s very tactical, he reads the puck well. I felt he’s really composed in there,” said Logan after the North Stars practice.

Bass knows a few people on the team already, which has helped him settle into the locker room.

“I’ve been welcomed by all the guys pretty well and the coaching staff here and Connor, he’s been great getting me set up, so I feel settled in already.”

Having spent some time in the WHL, Bass brings valuable experience to the Jr A level already at 17 years old.

“Junior is a big step up from U18. It’s a big growth that you just got to get experience and that’s what I got up there. I got in practice and stuff facing that junior level shot, so coming back here I can use that.”

While it’s unknown when Bass will get his first start with the North Stars, he could get a chance to get into game action for the first time this weekend when the North Stars take on the Melfort Mustangs on back-to-back nights.
