At least two candidates have stepped forward for the mayoral race in Tisdale.

Councillors Mike Hill and Dean Janzen have both indicated they will be seeking the mayoral chair, after the resignation of Roy Skoglund in August.

Hill has taken a leave from council while announcing his candidacy.

Mike Hill (Town of Tisdale)

The Tisdale-born Hill has been on council for nine years.

“I have gained a lot of experience being involved with Invest Tisdale, Parks and Rec, Fire Board to name a few,” Hill said in a social media post announcing his entry into the race.

“We have accomplished a lot over the years with landfill expansion, new sewage treatment plant, and building a solid infrastructure.”

Hill is the Office Manager at Chupa Trucking and according to his council profile on the Town of Tisdale website, also has over 20 years in the banking industry. He has also been involved in a number of local organizations, including New Sask Community Futures, the Tisdale Lions Club, Tisdale Snowmobile Club, and the Tisdale Masonic Lodge. Hill also served as a member and past president with the Kinsmen Club.

“Throughout his time on Council, Mike is proud of the work accomplished to support responsible financial management, including efforts to minimize taxation,” his profile on the Tisdale website stated.

“He has also played a key role in the completion of major infrastructure projects such as the new sewage treatment plant, lagoon expansion, and upgrades to the Regional Landfill. He has championed enhancements to recreational amenities for all ages, including the addition of a dog park, skate park, walking trails, and the introduction of various community programs like cooking classes, yoga sessions, and walking groups.”

Janzen, who is also a Tisdale native, was a long-time teacher at Tisdale Middle and Secondary School (TMSS) prior to his retirement. He and his wife Chris, also a retired teacher, purchased the Falkon Theatre and restored the facility.

Dean Janzen (Town of Tisdale)

He said in a social media post that he brings valuable experience and a unique perspective to the mayoral race.

“Our community deserves the opportunity to choose the path forward, and I believe a mayoral race with exceptional candidates will inspire excitement and engagement in the upcoming election,” Jansen said in the post.

“As I complete my time managing the Falkon Theatre, I feel this is the right moment for me to step forward. I have the time, energy, and passion to help lead Tisdale into a bright and prosperous future—just as I worked to strengthen and grow the theatre during my time there.”

Janzen said he has a deep understanding of Tisdale and a passion for the community.

“This is where I grew up, where I have worked, raised my family, and where I continue to invest my energy. I want to see Tisdale thrive, not only for us today but for future generations as well.”

His social media post said it’s important for a mayor to be a unifying voice, to represent the town with pride, and to help chart a vision for the future.

“A mayor must listen, collaborate, and make decisions that reflect the needs of all residents.”

Janzen said his years as a teacher taught him the value of patience, clear communication, and working with people of all backgrounds, and his time at the Falkon Theatre showed him how to build partnerships and lead with creativity.

“I am ready to serve as your public voice in local government and to work with our community to build a future we can all be proud of.”

The nominations for mayor are open until Oct. 8, with an advance poll being held Nov. 8 and the by-election taking place Nov. 12.
