La Ronge teens join high performance curling program

Three teens from the La Ronge area are looking to up their game this winter by joining the CURLSASK High Performance Program.

“CURLSASK offers this program … for curlers across the province to try and help them reach the next level with extra supports and extra ice time to help them try to reach the podium at provincials and then hopefully going on to nationals if they are successful,” explained Head Coach and La Ronge Curling Club Vice-President Karla Hardcastle.

“We will be crisscrossing the province throughout the club curling season, which starts this weekend in Regina. We have bonspiels in Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Lloydminster, North Battleford and Estevan. We’re going to have a really busy season and hopefully that will lead to some good success for the girls, where they have lots of opportunity for good competition with teams across the province.”

Members of the curling team include Heidi Hardcastle (skip), Alison O’Brien (lead), Idabelle Llorente Roque (second), and Lara McKee (third). McKee, who is a resident of Turtleford, is new to the team this season.

In addition to extra support like mental performance coaching and sports psychology, the girls will also be given access to Pat Simmons, a well-known professional curler.

With registration for the La Ronge Curling Club now open, Hardcastle is hoping the number of people involved grows. The club is offering four days a week of league curling starting Oct. 20.

“Mondays and Tuesdays is just open mixed fours. We’re offering a doubles league throughout the entire season on Thursday evenings and then we’re trying out a mini season of triples on either Wednesdays or Fridays depending on how much interest we get on which evening throughout the month of November,” she said.

“For our youth, we are trying something different this year where we are hoping to have enough youth curlers after school to be able to start running a mini youth league on Thursdays after school and then an optional practice on Tuesdays for those who want some extra skill development.”
