A chance to experience the wide variety of cultures in northeast Saskatchewan.

Culturama is being held at the Kerry Vickar Centre in Melfort on Saturday.

Melfort Museum Curator Brenda Mellon told northeastNOW the day is an exciting event for the community.

“The Kerry Vickar Centre will be filled with lots of cultural displays,” Mellon said. “The entire gym will be full of displays as well as different demonstrations and information booths.”

Cultural displays in Swartout Hall will showcase Canada, India, Ireland, Germany, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Philippines, Scotland, South Africa, Sweden, Ukraine, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Children’s activities will also be available at the event, with glitter tattoos, balloon twisting, and a quiet room with movies. The Melfort Arts Council is holding a ribbon skirt/shirt craft workshop, and the Melfort Library will once again feature book spine poetry and crafts in a bag. The Wheatland Calligraphy Group will host bookmark making and a handmade book display.

There will also be art exhibitions and a performance from the Nipawin Veselii Ukrainian Dancers, a judo demonstration, Indian classical dancing, Indigenous drumming and dancing, and Filipino Videoke.

“It’s going to be a great day, and of course, we’re going to have food throughout the whole day,” explained Mellon.

Several of the cultural displays will feature samples and food items for sale, while there will also be Filipino, Indian, and Nigerian food to purchase.

“I think there’s something for everyone, for sure.”

The event is held in conjunction with Culture Days, a national celebration of arts and culture. Mellon said they apply for funding through SaskCulture for the event, and they have additional partners to make Culturama happen.

“It’s all about celebrating diversity and culture within our community, so we’re just thrilled to have so many cultural displays this year,” Mellon said. She added the event shows the diversity within the Melfort area, and that people are excited to share more about their cultures.

Culturama runs on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kerry Vickar Centre.

Admission is by donation.
