Nigerian community prepares for Naija Day celebration in Nipawin

A celebration marking 65 years since Nigeria was granted full independence from Great Britain will be held this weekend in Nipawin.

Joseph Akinjobi, President of the Association of Nigerians in Northern Saskatchewan, explained Naija Day is a time of celebration, a time of unity, and a time of reflection as a people.

“And also a time to remind ourselves that we have to protect the image of our nation in a positive way in the environment where we now find ourselves, to keep the flag of Nigeria high as we continue our journey of life around here in Saskatchewan and wherever we find ourselves across the world.”

Upwards of 200 people are expected to attend Saturday’s festivities at the Evergreen Centre and Akinjobi confirmed it’s open to the public. The celebrations will include traditional Nigerian foods and a youth talent showcase. Akinjobi noted most of the youth were not born in Nigeria, and so the responsibility lies with the parents and grandparents to teach them the culture.

“If you lose your identity in life, you’ve lost everything, so we try to establish the fact that they are who they are, their identity must stay with them,” he said.

Recalling personal memories as a child where his family gathered around the television to watch the parades and celebrations, Akinjobi explained the Oct. 1 anniversary date is a reminder of the fact that the Nigerian people are not where they used to be 65 years ago. He added with freedom has come development and immense growth.

“In the new environment, where we find ourselves, is it time for togetherness you know it’s time for celebrations.”

Recognizing they are members of a diverse community, Akinjobi said they’ve extended invitations to local First Nations, as well as representatives from the Filipino and Indian communities. Local politicians are also expected to attend.

Saturday’s event starts at 2 p.m.
