Prairie Dogs capture second SFLL Harvest Cup

The Prince Albert Prairie Dogs made Sask. Field Lacrosse League (SFLL) history over the weekend, becoming the first club to win two Harvest Cups.

The league championship is the first for P.A. since they won the inaugural Harvest Cup in 2021. This year, the playoffs and final were held in Sturgis, where the Dogs went undefeated.

“It was good to finish up the season nice and on top,” said head coach Matt Robin. “The guys came together and were able to play really, really well. We went 4-0, which is what you want to see when you go into a championship weekend, so overall, we were quite happy with the result.”

Only four of the six teams in the league were allowed to attend championship weekend, as Yorkton and Saskatoon were disqualified because, according to a league Facebook post, they “did not fully compete in the regular season and therefore did not meet the SFLL eligibility requirements for participation in playoffs.”

The worst part about that was that Yorkton was scheduled to host the playoffs and as a result, things were quickly moved about an hour north to Sturgis. Despite the last-minute changes, Robin said that didn’t bother the team at all, adding they were also short some bodies on the weekend.

“It didn’t really affect us that much being shorthanded or changing the fields and having less teams.”

Robin continued that the depth of experience on the bench was the ticket to their success.

“We had a few younger guys that weren’t able to participate in the fall field season because there just wasn’t enough numbers in the province, so we were able to get them to play with us, and they really helped us on the backside, on the defensive end.”

“It’s very beneficial having those young legs being able to run because it is a full football field, so it’s tiring on us older guys, but the young guys really stepped up. Our bench wasn’t as big as we had hoped it would be since the beginning of the season, but we were able to make it work with the bodies we had.”

Next season, the Prairie Dogs will be hosting the 2026 SFLL Harvest Cup playoffs during the first weekend of October.

With two championships to their name, Prince Albert is now the team with the most wins in the brief SFLL history, while Sturgis, Moose Jaw, and Saskatoon are tied with one each.
