Valleyview Towers shift frees up Battlefords housing units for families in need

The Battlefords Housing Authority is relocating several dozen senior tenants as part of a plan to free up more units in Valleyview Towers for families in need of housing.

Vice-chairman Clayton Lazar, who also serves as a councillor for the Town of Battleford, said the move involves transferring residents from Tower Two into Tower One so Tower Two can be renovated and repurposed for single-family dwellings.

“Because of the lack of housing in our area for single family dwellings, there was a need to progress vacancy in Tower One. Both towers were very underutilized.”

He said there’s no fixed end date for the process, as staff are working gradually with each tenant.

“We’re just kind of guiding the senior residents in Tower Two over to Tower One right now, and then having open houses, making sure they feel comfortable moving from one area to the next,” he said.

Tower Two had been “very, very under occupied,” Lazar added, with only 20 to 30 per cent of units filled before the change began. About 35 seniors are being asked to relocate to Tower One.

The renovations underway in Tower Two are aimed at making the space more suitable for families, including updated utilities and layout adjustments.

“It just needed to be updated as well — very old buildings — and the renovations needed to take place in key things, like the water system needed to be replaced in some of the areas,” Lazar said.

He acknowledged the move has been difficult for some seniors, though support is being offered.

“They are being compensated by the province $700 for the move over,” he said.

“But there are some that don’t want to transition over, and that’s fine, they’re more than welcome to stay in Tower two… they’re not being asked to leave the housing authority, but it’s their decision on whether they want to go or not.”

Both towers remain part of the same subsidized housing network, which Lazar said continues to be managed locally under the Saskatchewan Housing Authority.

“It’s just the designation of what those buildings were for is changing, and we’re accommodating a need of a category that’s really needed for housing in our in our region.”

Lazar added that the Battlefords Housing Authority is jointly operated by representatives from both the Town of Battleford and the City of North Battleford and is primarily funded through the provincial government.
