Drug Alert

Alert warns of highly dangerous drugs circulating in North Battleford

Oct 8, 2025 | 12:21 AM

An incident of lost or stolen vials of medication that were discarded as medical waste has led to a drug alert for North Battleford.

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health said ‘highly dangerous drugs’ are potentially circulating in the area and carry a risk of paralysis and death.

The vials that were discarded may contain unknown quantities of fentanyl, morphine, midazolam, rocuronium, succinylcholine, propofol, and ketamine.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority said the vials could look like clear or milky white liquid.

The alert warns that use of rocuronium and succinylcholine will result in paralysis of respiratory muscles leading to the inability to breath, and death if not managed immediately with proper airway support and ventilation.

The use of propofol or ketamine could lead to decreased heart rate, low blood pressure, loss of airway reflexes and loss of conciousness.

Naxalone can reverse the effects of fentanyl and morphine, although multiple doses may be needed. Naxalone will not reverse the effects of benzodiazepines or paralyzing agents.

The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act protects those who witness an overdose or seek emergency assistance during an overdose.

The Saskatchewan NDP have responded by pushing the Sask. Party to improve their overall response to the drug and overdose issue with a four point plan.

They would like to see a response that:

  • Implements real-time drug alert systems and overdose data;
  • Develops and implements an emergency action plan to fund frontline services;
  • Focuses on funding overdose prevention and mental health support;
  • Improves tracking and public health reporting of drug toxicity deaths.
