The standings in the WHL are starting to spread out now that most teams are 5-6 games into the season, and with that the Prince Albert Raiders are standing tall at the top of the East Division and second in the Eastern Conference. In game two of a six game homestand, the Raiders will look to improve that record against the visiting Vancouver Giants.

The meeting between the Raiders and Giants last year is one that veterans of the Raiders won’t soon forget. Game 11 of the season, after losing three of four games on the October road swing through B.C. already, the Raiders suffered a 10-1 loss to the Giants to end the road trip and send the Raiders back to Prince Albert on the 16-hour bus ride with a record of 2-7-2 (Wins-Losses-Overtime Losses) through their first 11 games.

That loss would serve as the final straw, and the Raiders completely flipped their record on its head by going 9-1-1 in their next 11 games.

This season, the Raiders will be heading into the game against Vancouver rested with a record of 4-0-1, while the Giants played last night against the Saskatoon Blades where they lost 6-1 for a 2-4-0 record.

On special teams, the Raiders powerplay has scored in every game so far this season, they are still tied for fifth in the league at 31.6 per cent on the year. On the penalty kill, the Raiders went a perfect 8/8 in their last game to become the eighth ranked penalty kill in the league at 80 per cent.

As for the Giants, their powerplay is the one tied for fifth with the Raiders at 31.6 per cent. On the flipside, the Giants penalty kill six games into the season sits as the worst in the league at 55.6 per cent.

On to top scorers, Brayden Dube continues to lead the team with 4G-3A-7P on the season including three goals on the powerplay. Daxon Rudolph is tied for second with 2G-4A-6P alongside Riley Boychuk with 0G-6A-6P, and Aiden Oiring sits in the third spot with 3G-2A-5P.

The Giants are lead by defenceman Ryan Lin who has 2G-8A-10P to start his draft season. Dallas Stars third round pick Cameron Schmidt sits second with 2G-7A-9P, and 20-year-old Ty Halaburda is third with 6G-2A-8P.

For goaltenders, the tandem of Michal Orsulak and Dimitri Fortin has identical 0.902 save percentages through two games. Fortin got the start on Saturday against Red Deer and has a record of 1-0-1, while Orsulak has been resting for a week with a record of 2-0-1.

In goal for the Giants, they’re running with the 18-year-old tandem of Burke Hood and Owen Lunneborg. Hood has taken five games this year with a record of 2-3 and a save percentage of 0.839. As for Lunneborg, he’s played in one game with a 0.667 save percentage so far.
