How Humboldt basketball player became 3-time world champion

Constanta, Romania (2022), Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia (2023), and Shanghai, China (2025)… all three places share a similarity.

For Humboldt native Paige Crozon, the similarity those places share is the locations in which she’s been crowned a world champion.

The 3×3 Women’s Basketball superstar, Crozon, won her third world championship with Team Canada last month in Shanghai.

“The culture that we’ve built, no matter the players who are coming in, we have a standard and expectation for how we carry ourselves both on and off the court. It’s always special to win a world title, but to have now won half of the FIBA Women’s Series so far, it feels pretty good,” she told northeastNOW.

“Coming off the Paris Olympics last year, we were a little bit uncertain what this season would look like, and so we just tried to continue to evolve and grow on some of the skills that we’ve been kind of building over the last six seasons. I’m just proud of the resilience of our team and how we handled and carried ourselves, considering some of the high emotions after Paris.”

Team Canada underwent some roster changes ahead of this season, as just half (two of four) of their players were the same as they were last series finale.

Couple that new roster with a World Cup year, in which the Canadians won bronze earlier in the summer, and there were new challenges for Crozon and company to overcome.

“It felt good to win after winning bronze at the World Cup. I think part of the process is just like the improvement over the course of the season. We put in a lot of work and improved over every single tournament over the course of the season, so finishing on top versus third was just like a testament to our development. It just seems like there’s a lot of potential for this group, and I love the style of play and the chemistry that we have, so I’m really looking forward to future years,” Crozon added.

“This year has had some new challenges that our team hasn’t faced in prior seasons, but it also felt like there was more opportunity. Our style of play adjusted, and all four of our players were involved in every single play when on the court. Also, for me personally, it provided more of an opportunity to step into a little bit more of a leadership role. With change comes growth, and it’s not always comfortable, but I’m happy with how we rose to that challenge over the course of the season.”

Now, an enjoyable offseason awaits, while also preparing for the next big things ahead for this group.

In particular, despite the biggest event in sports still three years away (the Olympics), these Canucks have already set their sights.

“It seemed like we worked this season towards the women’s series final, and then we were able to kind of have our best performance at the end of the season, which is always what you want as a team,” concluded Crozon.

“We always have our sights set on the Olympics, just because of the magnitude of that particular event. We’ll use all the events in between to help us prepare and refine what we’re doing. All of the points will contribute to our qualifications for the Olympics, so we’re just trying to get better, earn points, and do our best to represent our team, community, and country on the international stage.”
