It’s been a great start to the season for the Prince Albert Raiders team, but the Raiders prospects are thriving as well. Three of them were recently named to rosters for the upcoming WHL Cup running October 22 to 26 in Red Deer.

Representing the Raiders on the defending champion Team Alberta is forward Tripp Fischer, who the Raiders picked 52nd overall in the 2025 WHL Draft.

On Team Manitoba are Raiders 16th overall pick Athens Shingoose, and 62nd overall third round pick Brady Filmon, who were line mates together during the 2024-25 season with the RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg’s U15 program.

For Shingoose, it’s a continuation of an exciting year for him. While he enjoyed his first crack at Raiders camp earlier this year, the 15-year-old forward is excited to see where he stacks up against other prospects from around the league.

“It’s very honoring just to represent Team Manitoba. Me and Filmon, we’re great buddies, and yeah, I’m excited to see how the talent is and see where I stand in between all of them. I’m looking forward to it.”

The two are going to be separated to start the year with Shingoose playing for the U18 squad at RINK Winnipeg, while Filmon is going to be with the U17 group.

So far in the preseason, Shingoose’s team is a perfect 7-0 in exhibition games as they get set to for their home opener this coming Friday against the Wenatchee Wild Hockey Academy.

After being a part of Raiders camp, Shingoose has some goals set for himself to make sure he’s ready to step into the WHL next year. Listed at 5’8, 137 lbs, Shingoose wants first and foremost to be better for his teammates, but he also wants to put on some weight this year as well.

“Big thing for me right now is gaining weight, building more muscle, being stronger on my feet. I don’t really have a point total set, but I’m just going to see how the season goes and hopefully I get those good numbers. I’m looking forward to it, we have a good group.”

As for his time in Prince Albert, Shingoose can’t wait for a chance to become a Raider full time. Coming into a new city from so far away, Shingoose was surprised to find out how many of the Raiders fans already knew who he was when he showed up to camp.

“I had a few guys that came up to me, he was like, ‘yeah, you’re a really good hockey player’. I just love that. I just like to see that and hopefully I get to see that a bit more when I go back up there.”

Overall, Shingoose enjoyed his first experience with the Prince Albert Raiders camp, making it into two preseason games against the Saskatoon Blades. When he was here in Prince Albert, he looked to one of last year’s rookies to help him get acclimated to the WHL game.

“It was just like a very big jump. I was learning from Riley Boychuk teaching me a few things. He’s one of the smaller guys, so he helped me through a bit of it and he just told me not to be afraid and just be playing like one of the bigger guys and don’t be afraid of going in the corner battles, just kind of battling adversity. I just had so much fun from that.”

Shingoose is certainly excited to be representing the Raiders at this year’s WHL Cup, but he may be more excited to become a Raider next season.
