Positive outlook for Outback Thunder with continuous improvement

Oct 11, 2025 | 3:55 PM

The Carrot River Outback Thunder are 1-1-1 so far in the 2025/26 PJHL (Prairie Junior Hockey League) campaign, as they look to continue their improvement year by year.

Head Coach Steve Percy was hired two years ago, as he continues to make his mark on the program early on in his third season.

After missing the playoffs in 2023/24, the Outback Thunder fell in the Survivor Series in 2024/25.

The goal now is to maintain a .500 record or better and make the postseason.

“It’s a process, but I think we’re moving in the right direction. We have more kids in town, and we’re skating four times a week, so we consistently have 15 kids around. We still have six kids who are going to school in the city, but our direction is to try and get more kids here and spend more time on the ice. We have eight rookies this year, a good returning core, and they’re all working hard. I’m just really looking forward to seeing what these guys can do throughout the season,” Percy told northeastNOW.

“We have some good vets returning who have some experience in getting there, so it’s about pushing forward and maintaining consistency throughout the year. We’re a team that’s going to thrive on work ethic and physicality, so hopefully we can carry that throughout and be successful.”

All three of Carrot River’s contests so far this season have been one-goal games, as each match presented them with a chance to win.

Percy is happy with those circumstances early on in the year and knows more results will come as experiences grow.

“Our first two games, we had some guys who didn’t get into a game prior to the start of the regular season, but were doing some good things, so guys are still just trying to figure each other out. I think it’s gonna go well this year,” he added.

“This is a program where we’re trying to promote development and hopefully move some more guys up through the ranks… looking around the dressing room, they all want to be here. It’s a pretty good, tight group already, and they haven’t quit working yet. They really all have positive attitudes and good work ethics, so I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens this year.”

The Thunder are back on the ice tonight (Saturday) when they host the Martensville Chiefs.
