Hall Lake robbery case results in 13 month jail sentence for backseat passenger

A man who was an occupant in a vehicle, knowing there was a sawed off prohibited gun in the front seat, has received a jail sentence amounting to about 13 months.

With credit for time spent in remand, 37-year-old Floyd Ratt has just over eight months left to serve.

The sentencing hearing was held Tuesday afternoon at Court of King’s Bench in Prince Albert.

On June 25, 2024, RCMP received a report of an robbery in Hall Lake.

The subsequent investigation determined several people approached an individual, threatened them with a firearm, then pulled them from their vehicle and stole it.

The officers located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle did not stop so officers set up a tire deflation device, which the suspect vehicle ran over.

Police then blocked the vehicle and the occupants were arrested.

Ratt was sitting in the back seat. A sawed off 22 LR Savage rifle was discovered by the front passenger seat.

Following his time in jail, Ratt will be on probation for one year and prohibited for 10 years from owning or possessing any firearms or explosives.

His lawyer Laura Mischuk mentioned her client’s struggles with a drug addiction (cocaine and marijuana) contributed to his behaviour, but added he was intent now on staying clean, planning to attend programming, and had a lot of family support.

“He wants to take responsibility,” she said.

Floyd’s sentence represented a joint submission from lawyers, and Crown Prosecutor Jessica Quan noted that at the conclusion of a preliminary inquiry it was realized the charge Ratt pled guilty to was most fitting of his involvement.

Also charged in the case were Quinton Ross and Alicia Halkett.

Halkett, who was accused of driving impaired, had her charges stayed on Feb. 21, 2025.

Ross, who entered a similar plea to Ratt, was sentenced at La Ronge Provincial Court and received one year probation and a lifetime firearms ban.
