First snow storm knocks down trees and powerlines

Sturgeon Landing without power since weekend storm

With the snowstorm that came through the prairies over the weekend, the community of Sturgeon Landing has been without power since Sunday due to trees that fell and took powerlines with them. The community has been without power and potable water in that time, and so the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation is sending in generators and water so that members of the community will be able to cook meals until the power is fixed.

There is no timeline on when the power will be restored, but according to PBCN Emergency Response Manager Duane Hiebert, they could be waiting until Wednesday.

“Manitoba Hydro is working on the largest centers and will be getting to Sturgeon Landing hopefully today, but it doesn’t seem like today. So tomorrow or the next day.”

Heibert continued, “We had some generators in Sturgeon Landing, but not enough for the 17 homes. So we are hauling more generators over there for each individual home. We have potable water coming down from Can Aqua out of Flin Flon, Manitoba, and we’ve also organized grocery delivery for Sturgeon Landing and it’s on its way today.”

Because of the proximity to the Manitoba border, the community of 17 homes receives their power from Manitoba Hydro. The power company has managed to bring power back into larger centres like Flin Flon and The Pas, and is now continuing to repairs for the smaller communities.

According to Environment Canada’s historical weather data, the snow storm that came through October 12 dropped about 21.7cm of snow (equal to 2.17mm of precipitation) in the Flin Flon weather station, or about 8 1/2 inches of snow.
