North Battleford curling leagues looking for senior curlers

Oct 17, 2025 | 10:39 AM

The New Horizons and Carol Christopher curling leagues are searching for individuals aged 60 and up who are interested in joining the sport.

The New Horizons league has their draws every Tuesday at 1 p.m., while the Carol Christopher league plays on Thursdays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The seasons run from October to December, then January to March after a brief winter break.

John Yarske of the New Horizons league encourages people to try it out, describing the league as “mostly social and recreational”. They regularly have coffee together as a group after the games. Yarske emphasized the social aspect of the league being important to them.

They have a season wrap-up event at the end of the year with awards and prizes. Yarske said that it’s an entertaining league to play in and that everyone gets along well in a very socially oriented atmosphere.

In the summer, the group also puts on a golf league with many New Horizons members playing in both sports. However, the numbers in the league overall are dwindling.Yarske said it is hard work trying to find more people and can entail “dozens of phone calls every week trying to find substitute curlers just to keep the leagues running”.

Yarske has credited Dave Page who largely runs the New Horizons league, as well as Len Taylor who runs the Carol Christopher league for their efforts in trying to maintain the numbers. Yarske said that they need to find somewhere between 10-15 substitute curlers on short notice some days. Without more people joining the league, it may not be sustainable.

“Both of these gentlemen have done a remarkable job of almost single-handedly running these two leagues for years and with the diminishing numbers of new curlers, are working even more diligently in keeping things together,” said Yarske.

Brandon Hall, manager of Twin Rivers Curling Club was also praised by Yarske for his work at the club and giving the leagues a space to operate. Yarske urges seniors in North Battleford to try out curling not only to have some weekly recreational fun, but to support everyone who have worked incredibly hard to maintain the leagues.
