Red hot Hawks head south seeking seventh straight win

The Nipawin Hawks will head south this weekend riding a six-game winning streak.

Coming off a 3-1 win over Flin Flon Tuesday, head coach Tad Kozun said the club has found ways to win early this year.

“It’s been a good start,” Kozun said ahead of the Hawks road trip starting in Estevan Friday. “I thought we hadn’t played a complete 60-minute effort until Tuesday [over Flin Flon] but we were finding other ways to win which shows the maturity of this group and what we went through last year. It’s coming together but there is a lot of hockey left.”

The Hawks are sitting with a record of seven wins and a loss which happened against Flin Flon back on Sept. 27. Since then, Nipawin hasn’t been defeated and that includes four wins on the road. The team has already beaten Estevan once and will take on the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) leading Weyburn Red Wings on Saturday. Kozun said keeping his players engaged every night will be key for them with the early season success.

“The buzz around town is getting bigger right now as we move on here, so we must stay even keel here. There is going to be highs and lows over the season, and we’ve got to be able to manage that and stay the course. We’ve talked a lot about it the last couple years, we just must stick to it,” Kozun added.

On Wednesday, the organization announced the acquisition of 2006-born defenseman Easton Adrian from the Battlefords North Stars. The Dalmeny, Sask. product will make his Nipawin debut Friday.

“We think Easton is a big acquisition for us,” Kozun said. “The way he can move pucks and he has that offensive ability that will help generate offense from the backend. We know our forwards can put the puck in the net, but he was something we felt we needed to add. He has lots of Junior ‘A’ experience, we are definitely looking forward to having Easton in the lineup tonight.”

Friday’s game can be heard on 105 CJRV FM and CJVR.com starting with the pregame show at 6:45 p.m. Saturday’s showdown with the Red Wings will be on 750 Beach Radio, also starting at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show.
