Oct 17, 2025 | 2:00 PM

High schools from around the province are in Prince Albert this weekend as a pair of tournaments takes over Carlton and Prime Ministers Park.

The Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association (SHSAA) is hosting 5A boys and girls soccer regionals, where the top placing teams will earn their spots at the provincial championships next weekend. Meanwhile, Carlton’s senior boys volleyball team is hosting their annual tournament featuring 12 teams from as near as Kinistino and as far away as Yorkton.

The boys kicked off soccer regionals at 10 a.m. Friday in Prime Ministers Park, with St. Mary squaring off with Martensville. Then, Carlton faced North Battleford at 12 p.m. The gold medal game is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. The winner of the boys regionals will be back in Prince Albert next weekend for the provincial championship, which is being hosted by St. Mary.

As for the girls, they too get underway on Friday, however, they won’t decide a winner until Saturday. The first game of the girls regional tournament goes at 1:45 p.m. between Lloydminster and Warman, also in Prime Ministers Park. That will be the only game Friday. Saturday’s schedule is as follows:

  • St. Mary vs winner of Lloydminster and Warman – 9:30 a.m.
  • Carlton vs North Battleford – 11:30 a.m.
  • Gold medal game – 3 p.m.

Bump, set, score

Carlton’s boys volleyball tournament kicked off on Friday and wraps up on Saturday evening. The tournament isn’t just one of the final ones of the season; it’s a build up to the 5A Boys Northern Rural Regional Tournament which Carlton is hosting on Nov. 8.

The top three teams from that tournament will be back in P.A. for the provincial championships the following weekend on Nov. 14-15, being hosted by St. Mary at Prince Albert’s SaskPolytech campus.

Joining Carlton, St. Mary, Kinistino and Yorkton at the tournament are Melfort, Bellevue, John Paul II (North Battleford), Warman, Clavet, Meadow Lake, North Battleford Comprehensive and Lloydminster.

Both Carlton and St. Mary began their runs at the tournament at noon, with Carlton facing Warman and St. Mary lining up against Melfort.
