Hawks drop another on the road

The Hawks returned to Nipawin early Sunday morning with no points in a pair of games in southern Saskatchewan including a 6-2 loss in Weyburn Saturday night.

After a 7-1 loss in Estevan snapped Nipawin’s six game winning streak Friday, Saturday’s game started poorly and ended in another lopsided defeat.

The Red Wings scored 34 seconds into the game and added another just a minute later. Weyburn went up 3-0 before the Hawks stopped the momentum on Jack Drake’s first goal of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season. Head Coach and General Manager Tad Kozun said his team wasn’t ready from the opening faceoff.

“That start wasn’t great. We didn’t want to defend, I thought we shied away from everything tonight. Our best players weren’t our best players. I thought our fourth line was our best line all night,” Kozun said on 750 Beach Radio after the game.

Weyburn expanded the lead to 5-1 during the second period. The teams traded goals in the third period leading to the four goal Red Wings win. Ashton Tait scored his third goal of the season for Nipawin. Kozun did boast about his team’s effort in the final period.

“I thought the third period, that was the best period we played al weekend. We played one period all weekend out of the six we played. In the third period we played the way we need to play, with passion,” Kozun said.

Nipawin took Sunday off and will return to action on Tuesday at home versus La Ronge. The Hawks won seven of their first eight games but have dropped the last two.

Faceoff at the Centennial Arena is 7 p.m.
