A man accused of shooting a Prince Albert landlord in the throat, will have to wait another year for trial.

As per discussions during a pre-trial hearing on Friday at Court of King’s Bench in Prince Albert, Preston Bird’s trial has been scheduled for the week of October 19, 2026.

He has been in custody since July 23 and was denied bail.

Not guilty pleas were entered to a number of charges including aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, discharging a firearm with intent to injure, and possession of an unauthorized firearm.

The shooting incident occurred on the evening of June 4, 2025. At approximately 6:45 p.m, police responded to a house in the 1900 block of 14th Street West.

The shooting reportedly occurred in the backyard area. (Nigel Maxwell/ paNOW Staff)

Officers began to render aid to the victim before Parkland Ambulance arrived on scene and transported the 57-year-old man to hospital with serious injuries.

Through their investigation, officers learned the suspect fled the scene on a bike.

Due to the fact that the offence occurred during an eviction gone bad, the story grabbed provincial attention and shone a spotlight on the issues landlords in the city face.

Bird was not the former tenant but is reportedly well known to the woman who was.

Meanwhile, the man who was shot was left paralyzed from the neck down and remains in hospital. His sister confirmed for paNOW he has regained the ability to talk.
