Mintos GM pleased with positive start to season

The Prince Albert Mintos were a bit of a question mark entering the new season, with lots of young new faces and inexperience throughout the lineup.

Fast forward a month into the year, and the Mintos sit in the middle of the Sask. Male AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL) standings, donning a 5-4-0-0 record (W-L-OTL-SOL) nine games into the season.

“There’s some positives, there’s some negatives, but we’re in a hunt of things right now, and we’re happy where we’re hitting,” said Mintos general manager, Dennis Pott.

P.A. started the season 2-1 in the brief September portion of the schedule and are 3-3 so far in October with just one game left in the month.

Pott added that, as expected, there are some growing pains on top of all the good things.

“I think with the young team right now, we’re seeing some inconsistency, but we’re also seeing some good things. The team’s fighting for the wins, they’re grinding out pucks, they’re blocking shots – they’re just making life easier for our goalies than it could be.”

Defenceman Liam Myhre leads the Mintos in scoring through nine games this season, posting four goals and three assists from the blueline. Behind him are two rookies in Madden Dell and Max Cooper, who both have six points each. Dell has two goals and four assists, and Cooper has one goal and five assists.

Pott mentioned how reliable Myhre has been so far, and how surprising Cooper has been.

“Myhre has been huge for us, he’s our horse on the back end. He can skate, he can puck handle, everything offensively that you could ask for that he can do. But on top of that, he’s really taken on a leadership role for us, and he’s out to play penalty kill. We’ve paired him with one of our young defensemen, and he’s really brought him along well.”

“Max is one of those players that likes the puck on his stick,” he continued. “He likes to run the play, he likes to see his linemates and find them when they’re open, [and] he’s also reliable defensively for us. We’re able to use him in big minutes, which really helps us. Without him, we’d be in trouble.”

He added that the club is going to get some big pieces back in the lineup within the coming days, like Carter Wingert, who returns from the SJHL’s Melville Millionaires, and Linden Abercrombie, who’s coming off a broken leg and is currently in Red Deer with Team Saskatchewan at the WHL Cup alongside fellow Minto Jakob Schmidt.

With some games under their belt against teams like Yorkton and Tisdale, who sit next to P.A. in the standings, Pott feels the real tests are still to come.

“We play Regina coming up here soon, and I’m sure that that’s going to show us if we are where we’re supposed to be, or if maybe we still have a lot of work to do. But these games against Tisdale are huge because they’re a good, hardworking team, and they’re right with us in the standings. So, you win that game or lose that game, it really drops you, or it really sets the bar higher.”

The Mintos are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 29, when they host Tisdale at the Art Hauser Centre for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
