The Prince Albert Raiders have been hot to start the season, still having not given up a regulation loss nine games into the season.

After five home games in a row where the Raiders have posted a 4-0-1-0 record (W-L-OTL-SOL), the Raiders will finish the six-game homestand against the Swift Current Broncos on Friday night and will head to Speedy Creek for the rematch on Saturday.

Prince Albert’s blazing start has them sitting fourth in the Eastern Conference with a record of 7-0-2-0, but all three teams ahead of the Raiders have played at least three more games. Most recently, the Raiders lost to the Edmonton Oil Kings 3-2 in overtime in a fantastic game. Before that, the Raiders had won six straight over Regina, Kamloops, Vancouver, Red Deer, Brandon, and Regina again.

As for the Broncos, they sit fifth in the Eastern Conference with a record of 6-3-1-0. Their last two games have gone to overtime, most recently losing 4-3 to the Red Deer Rebels. Before that, the Broncos beat the Kamloops Blazers 3-2 in a shootout at home and a 5-4 win in Brandon over the Wheat Kings.

Looking at the special teams matchup, the Raiders still boast one of the top power plays in the league despite only going 1/9 across the last three games. On the season, the Raiders power play is fourth in the league, operating at 29.4%. On the penalty kill, the Raiders sit in the middle of the pack at 11th, operating at 80.6%.

The Broncos special teams are both sitting one rank ahead of the Raiders on both power play and penalty kill. On the power play, the Broncos are ranked third with a 32.5% efficiency rating, and the penalty kill sits 10th at 81.6%.

On to leading scorers, where Aiden Oiring sits at the top of the list with 5G-7A-14P in nine games. With 4G-7A-11P, Brayden Dube is tied for second in team scoring with Riley Boychuk at 2G-9A-11P.

Boychuk also has the longest active point streak for the Raiders, with at least a point in every game so far this season. Next is Brock Cripps with an assist in each of his last five games (0G-5A). Benett Kelly scored his first goal in the WHL’s last game. He has 1G-1A in his last two games.

As for the Broncos, they’re led by an addition they made in the summer in 17-year-old Noah Kosick with 4G-13A-17P to start the season. After that, it’s Swift Current local Anthony Wilson 5G-6A-11P, and then there’s a tie for third in scoring between Josh McGregor (2G-8A-10P) and Hudson Darby (5G-5A-10P).

Kosick also has a point in all ten games so far this season, as does Anthony Wilson. After that, the only other active streak belongs to Russian-born Stepan Kuryachenkov, who sits with 1G-2A in his last three games. Also of note, Peyton Kettles put up 1G-1A in his first game back from an injury that’s kept him out to start the season.

On to the goaltending matchup, where the Raiders have boasted the tandem of Michal Orsulak and Dimitri Fortin. The two goaltenders have eerily similar stats, identical records of 3-0-1-0. Orsulak has made 83 saves on 92 shots for a 0.902 save percentage in 242 minutes of play, while Fortin has made 83 saves on 94 shots for a 0.883 save percentage in 241 minutes. Orsulak has one shutout on the season.

In goal for the Broncos, Joey Rocha has been carrying the rock with a record of 6-1-0-0, tied for second in the league with most wins and a 0.903 save percentage. Backing him up is rookie Aiden Eskit with a record of 0-2-1-0 in three games and a 0.854 save percentage.

The Raiders and the Broncos will first do battle at the Art Hauser Centre Friday night at 7:00 p.m., and then again in Swift Current on Saturday. Friday’s game will be broadcast in its usual spot on 900 CKBI, while Saturday’s game will be moved to Beach Radio 101.5 FM to accommodate Saturday’s Saskatchewan Roughriders game.
