Change on the horizon as City Manager prepares to retire

Change is coming to Prince Albert’s city hall chambers as City Manager Sherry Person prepares to retire after more than three decades with the city.

Person said she has always loved her job but is confident that the city management is in good hands.

“I think the city is in a good spot, and I think they’re going to have great success,” Person said.

City Clerk Terry Mercier is also retiring, and council is expected to name Community Development Manager Craig Guidinger as interim manager and Savannah Price as interim clerk on Monday.

Interim employees often end up being named to the position permanently if it suits both parties.

“I think they are great leaders in our organization, and I think they are going to continue and build the city and grow the city and those types of things,” Person explained.

Person started working for the city in May 1994 as a clerk/stenographer and then moved into the executive office when possible, becoming city clerk herself to the manager she later replaced in 2022, Jim Toye.

One of the things she enjoys most about working for a municipality is the wide range of challenges that can pop up – from how functional the wastewater treatment plant is to a landfill or road issue the same day.

Over the years, Person has worked with many variations of council and has seen a lot of other people come and go. She particularly enjoyed being the returning officer during elections.

“Working for the city of Prince Albert as a public servant was always a dream for me,” she said. “It was a dream job, no matter what capacity it was in.”

One piece of advice Person has to whoever takes on the role she is leaving is to make connections with the community.

“I think my biggest words of advice would be to build strong partnerships with community stakeholders at an operational level and continue building the strong team that already exists here at the City of PA because we have exceptional workers and they give a lot every day.”

While her official last day of work is the end of December, Christmas holidays and such mean that her last city meeting seated to the left of the Mayor will be on Dec. 15.

After that, she has no plans to leave Prince Albert and move elsewhere. Instead, she will continue to find ways to give back, but this time around, as a community volunteer.
