Frights and delights at 3rd annual Zombie Walk

It was the perfect night for a walk…a zombie walk.

A couple hundred people gathered in Prince Albert’s Memorial Square around 5:30 p.m. Saturday to hear a spooky story before zombies led them down Central Avenue to a Monster Mash dance party taking place at the Gateway Mall.

Among the dozens of participants shuffling through downtown, Corey Ferchoff stood out for his chilling performance as the lead zombie on the walk. His eerie groans, creepy costume and convincing limp sent a few onlookers running. Tyler Wozniak helped Ferchoff keep the crowd shrieking and smiling.

Corey Rennie brought his daughter Molly, son Carson, and his friend Blake Knudson to what’s become an annual event in Prince Albert.

“The kids were super excited when they heard about it, and it’s fun to get out and explore the community in downtown Prince Albert and that’s kind of what we’re about,” said Corey.

“Honestly, Halloween has just been one of my favourite holidays since I was a kid,” said Molly. “Dressing up, getting to be somebody else for a little while is kind of nice, but mainly just getting to hang out with my dad and brother.”

As for what Carson and Blake were excited about the most, both said ‘the candy’ of course.

Clifford Werchola did his best impression of the ‘walking dead’ with some serious special effects makeup that included gory facial scars and blood.

“I already scared one little boy tonight,” Wechola laughed. “I just have to stop smiling…zombies don’t smile.”

Participants in the crowd varied in age, and so did the costumes – from witches and zombies to a young Lightning McQueen racing car and legendary Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

“This is a really great thing for the community. I see not just little kids here – I see teenagers and adults and it’s really great because, at least from my point, the teenagers here that show up is great because they’re not out causing trouble and running wild in the streets. So, its a big family building thing and everybody can participate,” said Werchola.

The Prince Albert Downtown Business Improvement District put on the free family event. The Monster Mash dance party included a Ghost Train, zombie caricature artist and games. Family Futures also handed out treat bags to kids.
