Veterans’ legacy lives on through annual Battlefords Banner Display Ceremony

The sound of bagpipes echoed through the Alec Dillabough Centre in Battleford on Friday afternoon for the 7th annual Veterans Banner Ceremony.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch Number 9 joined in the project with the Fred Light Museum to present over 100 veteran banners in the Battlefords. Each banner features a veteran who was, at one time, a permanent resident of the local area. Banners will hang over main traffic routes in the Battlefords until mid-November.

Former Manager of the Fred Light Museum, Bernadette Leslie, said she feels proud to be able to host such an important event for the community.

“I feel right now, at this time in our lives, there’s too many veterans who aren’t being honoured anymore. So, I think this is our way of saying thank you to the veterans,” said Leslie.

Many dignitaries took the opportunity to give a heartfelt speech during the ceremony. Also in attendance was a Grade 4 class from Battleford Central School to perform “In Flanders Fields”. The Ceremony concluded with a viewing of veterans’ banners that have been on display in the Battlefords over the past few weeks.

Fred Light Museum’s new manager, Justin Miller, assures the community that the Veterans Banner Ceremony will remain a priority event.

“I’d maybe expand [the event] a little bit, but I think Bernadette has set it up well, and I will just carry on in the future,” said Miller.

A Remembrance Day service will be held on November 11th at the St. Vital Catholic School in Battleford. Following the service will be a beef dinner banquet held at the Battleford Legion.
